Make better choices with evidence-led reviews.

Top8Reviews compares service businesses on published criteria and cited evidence. Our editorial assessment and customer ratings always appear side by side, never blended in secret, and no business can pay to rank.

  • No pay-to-rank
  • Two ratings, shown apart
  • Sources on every page

Choose your market

Licences, registers and consumer rights differ by country. Pick a market and every category page opens on its rules first.

How our ratings work

Every business we rank carries two separate measures. You can see both, and the formula that weighs them is public.

Editorial assessment

Our researchers score each business against the published criteria for its category, such as licensing, evidence of quality work, pricing transparency and aftercare. Every score links to the evidence behind it and the date it was checked.

60% of the ranking score

Customer feedback

Star ratings from people who used the business, adjusted so that a handful of reviews cannot swing the result. Reviews follow published rules, and incentives must be disclosed.

40% of the ranking score

Overall ranking score

The weighted combination of the two, with the weights and the small-sample formula on our methodology page. Paid placements are labelled and never enter it.

Top 8 rankings, built in the open

Each ranking covers one category in one market. A business enters only after it passes the eligibility checks and every criterion has evidence behind it. If fewer than eight qualify, the list is shorter and says why.

  1. CandidatesCategory, market and eligibility rules defined first.
  2. ResearchFirst-party information and independent evidence gathered.
  3. EvidenceEach source logged with its date and reliability.
  4. AssessmentEvery criterion scored with a written rationale.
  5. Quality reviewAccuracy, consistency, conflicts and fair wording checked.
  6. ApprovalAn editor signs off the scores and the method version.
  7. PublicationScope, dates, sources and disclosures published together.
  8. ReassessmentRedone on schedule and after any material change.

Guides for making the decision

Practical, sourced guidance that applies whichever business you choose.

How to check a business is legitimate

Before you sign a contract or send a deposit, confirm that the business exists as a legal entity, holds the licence its work requires and is registered for tax where it says it is. Official registers in each market let you check.

How to spot fake reviews before you choose

Fake and manipulated reviews are now specifically prohibited in the United States and the United Kingdom, yet they still appear. Here are the signs you can check yourself, what each market's law covers and where to report a review you doubt.

How to compare quotes like for like

Three quotes only help if they price the same job. Set the scope in writing, ask each business to break its price down the same way, then compare the terms behind the totals: tax, payment stages, validity and how changes are priced.

How to pay deposits and staged payments safely

A deposit is the point of greatest risk in any service job: your money has gone and no work has been done. How you pay, how much you hand over and when decide what you can recover if the business does not deliver.

What to do when a service goes wrong

Start with a clear written complaint to the business. If that does not settle it, each market has routes to escalate, from ombudsmen and consumer authorities to small claims courts. This guide sets out what to do, and in which order.

What we will never do

The rules that keep a ranking worth reading. They are written into our editorial policy and apply to every page.

Sell a ranking position

Organic rankings cannot be bought, and a sponsor gains no points from paying.

Hide a review for a fee

A business can reply to a review or report a breach of the rules. It cannot buy removal.

Merge our two ratings out of sight

Editorial and customer measures are stored, shown and explained separately.

Call something verified without saying how

Every verification label names the exact check that took place.

Run a business in one of our categories?

You can report a factual error, give us your licence and registration details, and reply publicly once profiles open. You can never pay to change a score.

Questions about Top8Reviews

How the site works, how it is funded and how rankings are kept independent.

How does Top8Reviews make money without selling rankings?

Revenue may come from clearly labelled sponsored placements, business tools that do not touch scores, and disclosed affiliate links. None of it affects an organic ranking or an editorial score, and every commercial arrangement is listed on our advertising disclosure page so readers can judge it for themselves.

Why are editorial scores and customer ratings kept apart?

They measure different things. An editorial score reflects evidence we can check, such as licences, insurance and documented work. A customer rating reflects lived experience. Blending them into one unexplained number hides which kind of evidence drives the result, so we show both and publish how the ranking combines them.

Why might a Top 8 list contain fewer than eight businesses?

A business must pass eligibility checks and have evidence for every criterion before it can be ranked. When fewer than eight meet that bar in a market, we publish the shorter list and explain the gap. Padding the list with weaker candidates would make the ranking less useful.

Which countries does Top8Reviews cover?

Category guidance currently covers the United States, the United Kingdom, the UAE and the wider Gulf, plus international buying for services sold across borders. Each market section names the licences, registers and complaint routes that apply there.

Can a business ask for its ranking to be changed?

A business can submit evidence that a fact is wrong or out of date, and we will review it under our corrections policy. If the evidence holds, the assessment is updated and the change is logged. A request without evidence, or an offer of payment, never changes a score.
